Sheffield Community Network is a programme of work to ensure that new digital opportunities extend into disadvantaged and deprived communities through social enterprise and the creation of neighbourhood based facilities for digital access and participation.

A new programme to promote active participation and increase employment opportunities in the knowledge economy:

Establishing a series of Digital Media Centres and support to Social Enterprises.
Using funding to promote digital participation in order to enable citizens.
Helping deprived communities and disadvantaged social & economic groups in Sheffield to access and use ICT.
Giving them the tools to start enterprises and generate new jobs.
A collaboration between:

CIQA (Cultural Industries Quarter Agency)
CM Solutions
CMA (Community Media Association)
Commedia Sheffield
Access Space Network
Sheffield Community Network will work with and help develop existing media facilities within community centres, with the aim of promoting digital inclusion and economic engagement in deprived areas of Sheffield. It will develop and support the establishment of several neighbourhood based Digital Media Centres, which in turn will support new and existing Social Enterprises.

The centres will act as a focal point for digital enterprise and employment opportunities in the creative and digital sector. Each centre will support the development of sustainable enterprise at a neighbourhood level; this may include activities such as website development, ICT hardware recycling, community broadcasting, community information services and creative content production.

Each centre will form part of a network across the city and have access to a virtual platform which will support web development, podcasting and webcasting, as well as networking tools to facilitate knowledge sharing and exchange.
